USCG education and training requirements

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) sets drug and alcohol education and training requirements for crewmembers and supervisors. Our programs help you meet these requirements.

USCG education and training requirements

The USCG regulatory requirements for drug and alcohol education and training for crewmembers and supervisors are listed in 46 CFR part 16.401 [Opens a new browser tab]. Here is a summary.

Education

The education program must include, at a minimum, display and distribution of:

  • Informational material about alcohol and drug use and abuse
  • A community service hot-line telephone number for crewmember assistance
  • The employer's policy regarding drug and alcohol use in the workplace

Training

The training program must, at a minimum, include the following topics:

  • The effects and consequences of drug and alcohol use on personal health, safety, and work environment
  • The manifestations and behavioral cues that may indicate drug and alcohol use and abuse

Supervisory personnel must receive at least 60 minutes of training.
