FAA supervisor drug and alcohol training

Select the Basic or Advanced FAA supervisor drug and alcohol training program. Both are designed to meet the FAA's two-hour initial training requirement. The Basic program will also meet FAA's recurrent training requirement.

The Basic program trains FAA supervisors to carry out DOT reasonable suspicion testing. The training covers: supervisor roles and responsibilities; fundamentals of DOT testing programs; the scope of FAA testing; facts about alcohol, drugs, and their risks; signs of current alcohol and drug use; reasonable suspicion decisions; and reasonable suspicion testing steps.


The Basic program is recommended for supervisors whose testing program responsibilities are limited to reasonable suspicion testing, or who:

  • Receive separate training on other aspects of FAA testing, OR
  • Have prompt access to assistance from a trained DER or peer supervisors who have received Advanced training
