DOT supervisor drug and alcohol training

The Basic and Advanced training programs are designed to provide at least two hours of DOT supervisor drug and alcohol training. Their content is not specific to any DOT transportation mode.

The Advanced program covers all topics in the Basic program. In addition, the Advanced program covers: steps and safeguards in DOT drug and alcohol testing; post-accident, pre-employment and random testing; and the DOT return-to-duty process, including post-rehabilitation and follow-up testing.


The Advanced program will benefit supervisors with responsibilities beyond reasonable suspicion testing, including:

  • Supervisors involved in DOT random, post-accident, pre-employment, post-rehabilitation or follow-up testing, OR
  • Supervisors without prompt access to a DER for assistance, OR
  • Supervisors charged with assisting peer supervisors who have not received Advanced training.
