DOT supervisor drug and alcohol training

The Basic and Advanced training programs are designed to provide at least two hours of DOT supervisor drug and alcohol training. Their content is not specific to any DOT transportation mode.

Basic supervisor training explains the components of DOT testing programs. It helps supervisors understand their roles and responsibilities. And trains supervisors to recognize signs of current alcohol and drug use, make reasonable suspicion decisions, and carry out reasonable suspicion testing.


The Basic program is recommended for supervisors whose testing program responsibilities are limited to reasonable suspicion testing, or who:

  • Receive separate training on other aspects of DOT testing, OR
  • Have prompt access to assistance from a trained DER or peer supervisors who have received Advanced training
